57. rhythm4inclusion: Promoting Social, Emotional, and Learning Skills of Students with and without Special Education Needs by Developing Teachers’ Capabilities in Music, Dance and Digital Competences

The project supports teachers in their path to integrating arts for fostering inclusion by primarily piloting of the project (2nd project year) and the creation and delivery of the online training programme (3rd project year). The training programme will enable teachers across Europe to embed multi-arts into their daily teaching to teach curricular subjects and foster social inclusion. Through the piloting and training programme, teachers with no artistic training will be enabled to use the arts and overcome obstacles deriving from inhibitions and sense of inadequacy towards their own artistic abilities. They will gain knowledge of a method with innovative and successful practices to use with their students.

The MusiLib project appeals to everyone who has to deal with or who is interested in cultural awareness and cultural understanding. However, it mainly addresses primary school teachers who need to teach in multi-lingual and multi-cultural classrooms. The ultimate target group of the MUSILIB project are the primary schools children. Children will be active participants and develop a sense of ownership towards the project by creating themselves stories, which they will also dance and sing. Combining different forms of art in the creation of stories will help children to express themselves more effectively, which could also be a crucial benefit for the migrant communities.

51. eARTinED: ARTinED online: A new approach to education using the arts

e-ARTinED expands the research and the resources created in the ARTinED project 2011, also by providing a much awaited distance learning course. ARTinED was extremely successful, receiving praise and maximum score by the experts of the European Commission. E-ARTinED will organize the previous didactic materials in a systematic didactic set, expanding also on two new subjects: “Social inclusion through the arts” and “Exploring nature through the arts”. Collective piloting events will help to test and evaluate the new resources. E-ARTinED will create and deliver a 4-month online course for teachers across Europe from different and distant geographical areas, thus allowing teachers from any corner to experiment the project’s exciting, inspiring and effective methodology and practices. The ARTinED Community of Practice will also be created and will contribute in a substantial way to the project sustainabiility.

The project contributes to the openness for ubiquitous learning of the large-scale repositories of digitised text, graphics, audio, video objects and to the process of their transformation into learning content, adequately enhancing and facilitating the knowledge building. The interactive time independent access to broadband multimedia information is not supported using today's networks and client systems. The idea of TV Anytime is based on the local caching of broadband media streams and allows in this way an interactive and time independent access to this information. The major objective of the UP-TV project is the development of basic technologies for scalable TV Anytime systems that implement personal TV services for business and consumer applications. 33. UWA: Ubiquitous Web Applications

The objective of the project is to improve the design process for web applications, taking into account all the above elements. The goal is to improve the quality (for the users) of the applications being designed and improved the efficiency of the design and the project will develop a comprehensive methodology, covering all the aspects of design from requirements, down to detailed design; a companion of the methodology will be a set of tools supporting the different aspects of design. The tools will be able to export design documents in XML, allowing interchange of design pieces across the different tools of the project and also with "outside" tools. DELOS will provide a context for the continuous development of an international research agenda and constitute a reference point for Digital Library (DL) projects funded by the IST Programme, stimulating the exchange of experiences in this multidisciplinary area. It will make testbeds available, facilitate their interoperability, and provide mechanisms for the evaluation of models, techniques, and approaches, and the exchange of open-source software components. It will contribute to the definition of relevant standards. Appropriate take-up models will be developed to facilitate the exploitation of DL technologies by industry. 28. TOURnet: Integrated and Complete Support for the Tourism-Related SMEs of the Region of Crete through Interactive Media and Networks

Crete has a very large number of tourism-related SMEs which, in many cases, are family run companies (hotels, apartments, villas, rural homes, travel agencies, vehicle rental agencies, restaurant and entertainment companies, small laboratories for creating tourist related products, crafts, leather products, etc.). These SMEs, in most cases, do not have strong contacts outside Greece.

Document archives are typically stored on paper. In the next 20 years, both in the public and the private sectors (such as public administration, banking, insurance and finance), it will become impossible to handle them this way because of their increasing size. One possible solution will be to put all future information into electronic archives. The aim of the VENIVA project is to set up a pilot application of a virtual archive with a hypertextual interface that should become, through the implementation of the complete set of activities, an extensive example of such an information system, one that could be an answer to the growing needs of the sectors mentioned above.

19. HERMES: Foundations of High Performance Multimedia Information Management Systems

HERMES is an EC-funded project that will address and solve the fundamental software problems inherent in the design and implementation of these information systems.

Important common features of these information systems include the diversity of multimedia data types, the delay-sensitivity and resulting real-time requirements for accessing multimedia objects, the large size of multimedia objects, and their coordinated presentation in space and time. IDEALS will develop a modular training system which will make flexible distance learning packages available on demand for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and universities. Telematics-based modular courses, co-authored for cost effectiveness, will be delivered across Europe via interconnected local training centres serving both groups. Courses for in-company training, to be tested initially by some 20 SMEs, will be adapted to their individual needs and real-life problems. Testing in universities will involve students in computer labs or at home, with possibilities for remote tutoring and group learning.

MILORD was an R&D project and part of the Research & Development for Advanced Communications in Europe (RACE/Telematics) program of the EEC. 2. JANUS: Joint Academic Network Using Satellites

The aim of the JANUS project is to build a prototype of the telematic network that will be required by the future European Electronic Open University Network. Such an organisation is likely to be based on existing organisations including members of the European Association of Distance Teaching Universities. Thus the network to service such an institution would be a multi-campus Local Area Network (LAN).

The nature of inter-LAN links is such that they are permanently active, with a varying amount of actual traffic over a "base load" of network management traffic. This suggests that the network should be built on a basis of permanent connections (such as leased lines) rather than dial-up links, but where some of the permanent connections are of quite low capacity.
