Project Description
The JANUS project has been developed within the EEC DELTA (Development of European Learning through Technological Advance).
JANUS (D2003) was a new perspective of a private European data network using satellites. Using this network voice, date and video will be transferred throughout the whole Europe. The project is being 50% and another 50% by a group of six famous European organizations. These are:
- Open University of England, UK.
- GES MARCONI Communication Systems LTD., UK.
- European Association of Distance Teaching University, NL.
- Integrated Information Systems (IIS), GR.
- CENTRO DE ESTUDOS DE TELECOMUNICACOES, P
- University of Helsinki, F.
The above groups were also be responsible for the project's management.
JANUS will be using the European Satellite EUTELSAT II for the communication points junction. Through JANUS high quality telecommunication services can be provided even to the most distant agricultural territories of Europe. The networks' users can be educational organizations, research institutes, universities, technical universities, commercial and industrial companies, etc.
MUSIC became an associated organization in JANUS and is responsible for the Greek JANUS team. Therefore MUSIC is the university organization through which Greece will be able to participate in JANUS. As a result within the next 2-3 months a satellite terminal (VSAT) will be installed at MUSIC. It will be used for broadcasting and receiving open university educational programs. Such programs will be broadcasted by MUSIC towards Europe and vice versa. MUSIC intends to become gradually interconnected to all interested organizations and universities of Greece, so that they will have access to this Educational satellite network in which dozens of European organizations already are members.
