The DAIDALOS project (EC-US008) belongs to the research programmes of ESPRIT (ESPRIT Basic Research), within the cooperation of ESPRIT and National Science Foundation (NSF) of USA.
The main target of DAIDALOS was the development, estimation and exchange of techniques for the design and accomplishment of Multimedia Information Systems. Emphasis has been given to the efficiency and capability of these systems for extension in order to be used in industry.
Within the scope of this project was the cooperation of two European research groups (MUSIC/TUC, CNR-IEI) with two equivalent USA groups (University of California at San Diego - Prof. Rangan and University of Maryland-Prof. Faloutsos). For this object NSF funded the two later groups. The objective of the whole cooperation was the exchange of experience.
The project activities focused on the following research areas:
- Multimedia/Hypermedia
- Multiple level storage models and placement and retrival data techniques among levels.
- Indexing structures and content addressibility for multimedia data.
- Multimedia information systems for cooperation and communication between multimedia users.
