The project aims at supporting the dynamical exchange of information and experiences between the Community of People living in Historical Cities of Arts and Culture, their local cultural resources, and foreign visitors. The overall goal is to enable people to interact and co-operate in building a new, richer sense of community based on exchange of knowledge sedimented over the cultural resources.
The project is aimed at creating new tools, technologies and solutions to enhance the overlap and the exchange of the permanent, static, deep-rooted local culture with the foreign and temporary traces of people with different cultures within the local physical environment.
The project will define and implement an interaction medium supporting the information flow among the communities of cultural managers, visitors and local residents.

The objective of the proposed WG is thus to acquire a better understanding of the actual problems and limitations of the current technologies and methodologies which prevent an easy and cost effective development of multimedia interactive applications and to contribute to their solution. The long term aim is to contribute to the development of multimedia interactive application frameworks within which tools, techniques, and methodologies can be efficiently integrated. To achieve this objective the WG will coordinate the research activities of the partners in the following areas: (i) database technology evolution, (ii) on-line services interoperability, (iii) design methods and tools, (iv) tools integration and adaptation.

Important common features of these information systems include the diversity of multimedia data types, the delay-sensitivity and resulting real-time requirements for accessing multimedia objects, the large size of multimedia objects, and their coordinated presentation in space and time. Such features create formidable challenges, which any software solution must confront.

The aim of the JANUS project is to build a prototype of the telematic network that will be required by the future European Electronic Open University Network. Such an organisation is likely to be based on existing organisations including members of the European Association of Distance Teaching Universities. Thus the network to service such an institution would be a multi-campus Local Area Network (LAN).
The nature of inter-LAN links is such that they are permanently active, with a varying amount of actual traffic over a "base load" of network management traffic. This suggests that the network should be built on a basis of permanent connections (such as leased lines) rather than dial-up links, but where some of the permanent connections are of quite low capacity.
